You have advised in other posts that the code updates "on the fly".
What I dont understand is there does not seem to be any need to tell the "Search Engines" that the sitemaps have changed
Am I correct?
Given the number of search engines I dont see how this can RELIABLY happen
Can you explain what happens please?

Once SE is informed, your Sitemaps files are scanned periodically. You can also inform SE anytime you want to retrieve it. Please read http://sitemaps.org/protocol.php#informing for more details.
