MSU Crashes Server

Postby username1 » Thu Feb 05, 2009 8:13 am

Hi

I had MSU installed but it seems very resource hungry. Is it due to all of the queries going on as it spikes out the CPU and has crashed the server several times s a result. Maybe you could be as kind as to answer a few of my questions as I would like to get it up and running again.

Is there a way to reduce this resource occupation by hard coding anything?

Does it only rewrite to 3 levels due to this resource problem?

It is a dedicated server but we do get 2500 unique visitors (not hits) to our site per day.

I should also mention that google seems to have now penalised our pages for duplicate content, as a result seemingly from MSU now not automatically rewriting the URLs but those rewritten URLs still working to access the site.

First question to ask is why do you think this is caused by MSU?

What resources do you want to save? If database, there are is nothing to save because MSU does not make any extra SQL queries, all is loaded from cache.

No. This depends on your settings and in case of Zen Cart category depth may be up to 5 (more is not possible due to technical limitation of mod_rewrite or more precisely limitation of Rewrite Rules in .htaccess file - more category depth can be supported within Rewrite Maps which are also supported by mod_rewrite, but it requires root access which is obviously not permitted on shared hosting).

MSU has to and works fine on installations with double visitors amount on shared hosting. If you are experiencing performance troubles I recommend you to find out, whether it happen without MSU and where is the weak point (database, PHP, file operations...)

Post some examples or more details what is going wrong.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, when you say all is loaded from cache, presumably that has to be loaded into the cache at some point? Is that what causes the spiking of the processor when people initially hit the site?

Also how do I set it to rewrite to 5 levels? Is there an updated version of the fileset you could kindly send to my email address stored on this account?

I would love to get this working again, as apart from the way it slowed the server a bit and apparently made it crash at busy times (which is presumably because I need to upgrade the hardware to cope with what is demanded of it), it seemed to do a good job.

Each record for URLs in cache is created on first visit of each page.

Category depth can be set in includes/msu_tweak.ini file.
